Montessori at Little London Montessori
At Little London Montessori, our work is rooted in Dr. Maria Montessori’s philosophy and approach, built on careful observation, deep respect for the child, and trust in each learner’s natural growth. We believe children thrive when they are met where they are, offered meaningful hands-on experiences, and given the freedom to learn at their own pace.
This philosophy comes to life in our mixed-age classroom through child-sized materials, uninterrupted work periods that support focus, and lessons designed to cultivate independence, concentration, and joyful discovery. Teachers observe quietly, stepping in only when needed, so each child can build confidence, autonomy, and deep engagement in their work.
Because this approach shapes every detail of our classroom, we thoughtfully prepare the environment to support all aspects of a child’s development. Each material and lesson has a purpose, inviting curiosity, responsibility, and growth.
Our Classroom: A Space for Exploration and Discovery
Lessons are presented individually and in groups, and children progress at their own pace and interest.
Practical Life
Children build independence through real-life tasks: pouring water, arranging flowers, preparing food, polishing wood, and caring for plants. These activities strengthen fine motor skills, support concentration, develop responsibility, and naturally prepare children for early writing and mathematical thinking.
Sensorial Work
Children explore size, shape, texture, sound, and color through hands-on materials. A child might compare cylinders by weight or sort colors by shade. These experiences refine the senses and help children classify and understand the world with clarity and confidence.
Mathematics
Children begin with concrete materials: beads, counters, and numerals, and gradually explore the concepts that lead to addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Rather than memorizing rules, they discover relationships through sequenced, visual, and tactile work.
Language
Through a phonetic approach, children learn letter sounds, build words with the Moveable Alphabet, and progress toward writing and reading. A child might trace Sandpaper Letters, label objects in the room, or write a friendly note, joyful steps toward confident communication.
Cultural Studies & Creativity
Art, geography, music, and science weave naturally into the classroom. Children explore world maps, create artwork, discover musical patterns, and engage in simple experiments. These studies spark curiosity, build awareness of the wider world, and nurture creativity.
Grace & Courtesy
We guide children in peaceful communication, problem-solving, and thoughtful social interactions. This can look like greeting a friend, offering help, resolving conflict with gentle language, or simply remembering our three class rules: We are gentle. We are safe. We are kind.
Above all, our hope is for every child to feel known, capable, and deeply connected to their classroom community, confident learners who move through the world with curiosity, empathy, and purpose.
